The charming ‘She’ heads to Berlin to drink herself into a permanent stupor. Adorned in spectacular outfits, she wanders from bar to bar, from one glass of cognac to the next. The Berlin of the 1970s serves as an absurdist stage for her relentless drinking. Accompanied by a female wanderer, ‘She’, without uttering a single word, challenges all expectations surrounding female behaviour. A trio of nagging moralists named ‘Social Question,’ ‘Accurate Statistics,’ and ‘Common Sense’ follows her through the city, disputing every choice she makes.
With Ticket of No Return (1979), artist-filmmaker Ulrike Ottinger brought a feminist counterpoint to the male-dominated New German Cinema. Together with performer Tabea Blumenschein in the role of ‘She,’ Ottinger reflects on patriarchal gender norms in this dazzling film.
