This film is part of our winter series, running at De Uitkijk throughout December and January. This year, our winter series focuses on loneliness, but don’t worry, you can still enjoy warmth and good company at De Uitkijk…!
A young woman from Taiwan’s Generation Nix moves to Taipei in 2001 and begins working in a trendy bar, where she enters a doomed-to-fail relationship with HaoHao, a raver whose jealousy drives her crazy. Ten years later, Vicky tells her own story in the third person, wandering through Taipei’s clubs as if trapped in an endless trip down memory lane… She is no longer the naïve, directionless woman she once was, but her voice carries nostalgia for a time when everything seemed possible.
Millennium Mambo (2001) is the first in a six-part series in which Hou Hsiao-hsien portrays the lives of young people in contemporary Taipei. Much about Vicky remains unknown to the viewer, yet the portrait of Taiwanese hedonists captivates from beginning to end. Not only due to the meticulous direction and beautiful cinematography (Mark Lee Ping-bing), but also because of the compelling music and sound design, which won a special jury prize at Cannes in 2001.
