This film is part of our winter series, running at De Uitkijk throughout December and January. This year, our winter series focuses on loneliness, but don’t worry, you can still enjoy warmth and good company at De Uitkijk…!
Tender drama by Claire Denis (Beau Travail) about the intimate father-daughter relationship between a widower and his only child.
Lionel is a train driver who has raised his daughter alone into the young woman she has become. In a Paris suburb, they live a quiet, loving, almost symbiotic existence - moving through the days as if time has no hold on them. However, the fragile harmony begins to shift as the outside world slowly encroaches.
Denis’ modern adaptation of Ozu’s Late Spring is a poignant masterpiece about loneliness and relationships, touching and lingering without being depressing. As only she can, Denis in 35 Shots of Rum (2008) flawlessly merges story, image, and sound into an atmospheric whole. Cinematography by Agnès Godard, with beautiful music by Denis’ longtime collaborators, Tindersticks.
