DRIFT x De Uitkijk: Samsara (2023)
The annual collaboration between De Uitkijk and Wijsgerig Festival DRIFT is back! This time, Film & Philosophy explores the space between dream and deed. On four consecutive Monday evenings, we invite you to map out and climb, or even tear down, the mysterious wall that separates ideas from reality. From violent murder to meditative reflection, everything is explored as we cover the distance between dream and deed. And all this while you sit back and relax in the comfortable seats of the old De Uitkijk cinema.
The word is put into action by a philosopher who gives a short lecture before each screening.
On 6 April, we will be screening Samsara (2023) by director Lois Patiño. Marieke van der Steen will speak beforehand! Starts at 9 p.m.
Marieke van der Steen on Samsara (2023):
Samsara is a film about reincarnation that connects two worlds: Buddhist Laos and Islamic Zanzibar (Tanzania). The term ‘samsara’, derived from Sanskrit, has a rich philosophical meaning. In this lecture, the term is explained and we explore how film as a medium can ‘perform’ philosophy. The lecture examines the space between philosophy and art and how the film Samsara evokes an (embodied) experience in the viewer. During the film, you will be asked to close your eyes briefly. At that moment, the film and the viewer seem to temporarily merge. You are invited into an in-between world between fantasy and reality, between life and death, between dream and deed.
