DRIFT x De Uitkijk: A Land Imagined (2018)
The annual collaboration between De Uitkijk and Wijsgerig Festival DRIFT is back! This time, Film & Philosophy explores the space between dream and deed. On four consecutive Monday evenings, we invite you to map out and climb, or even tear down, the mysterious wall that separates ideas from reality. From violent murder to meditative reflection, everything is explored as we cover the distance between dream and deed. And all this while you sit back and relax in the comfortable seats of the old De Uitkijk cinema.
The word is put into action by a philosopher who gives a short lecture before each screening.
On Monday evening, 13 April, Film & Philosophy welcomes you to a screening of A Land Imagined (2018) by Siew Hua Yeo. The philosophical introduction will be given by Lilith Lee and will be in English. The screening starts at 9 p.m.
Lilith Lee on A Land Imagined (2018):
A Land Imagined 幻土 (2018), directed by Yeo Siew Hua, is a ground-breaking, genre-bending Singaporean film that draws on aspects of neo-noir and social realism to inquire into the mutual transformations of land and labour in the Southeast Asian city-state. Yeo is part of the recent Singaporean New Wave which finds in the cinematic medium ways to explore the relationship between transnational structures and the human condition that develops alongside and in spite of them. Yeo’s filmmaking is distinctively and consciously informed by his degree in philosophy: his films invite conscientious exercises of existential introspection, equipped with a wide range of concepts from the history of world philosophies. A Land Imagined (2018) emphasises the Zhuangzi over Descartes in its meditation on the transformations of dreams and reality - whether they are the dreams and reality of individuals or nations. The screening of the feature film will be preceded by a brief talk on how the film might be situated in the complex global history and philosophy of Singapore, as well as on the Zhuangian underpinnings of the film.
